The following information was transcribed from Jeremiah Humbert's newspaper obituary:
Jeremiah J. Humbert, 95, this city's last Civil War veteran, died early today at his home in Mineral Point. A member of the 35th Wisconsin Infantry, he said two and a half years of service during the war. He was wounded twice; not seriously. Humbert was born in Cumberland County, Pa., and came to Iowa County with his parents when he was 14. A farmer in the Town of Waldwick, he retired at 52. He had been a resident of the city for the past 11 years. He was a member of the Grand Army of the Republic and the Methodist Church. Survivors include one son, George, of the Town of Waldwick; three half-sisters; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the home and 2 in the Methodist Church, the Rev. C.E. Burdon officiating. Burial will be in Waldwick Cemetery. The Woman's Relief Corps will attend in a body, and the American Legion will hold services at the grave. (Humbert served in Company I of the 35th from Feb. 9, 1864, to March 9 of that year; then was transferred to Company G, where he served to March 15, 1866.
